What is the Minimum Living Income (Ingreso Mínimo Vital)?

The Minimum Living Income (Ingreso Mínimo Vital or IMV) is Spain's national welfare benefit designed to prevent poverty and social exclusion. Introduced in 2020, it provides a guaranteed basic income to individuals and families who lack sufficient economic resources to cover their basic needs.

As a Social Security measure, the IMV ensures a minimum level of income for those in economic vulnerability, with the ultimate goal of promoting social integration and helping beneficiaries enter or re-enter the workforce.

2026 IMV Payment Amounts

The IMV amount varies based on your household composition. Here are the monthly amounts for 2026:

Individual beneficiary: €733.60 per month
Two adults: €953.68 per month
Two adults + one child: €1,100.40 per month
Two adults + two children: €1,393.84 per month
Single parent + one child: €953.68 per month
Single parent + two children: €1,100.40 per month

The actual payment you receive is calculated as the difference between your guaranteed income amount and your actual income. You'll receive the benefit if this difference is at least €10 per month.

Who Can Apply for the IMV?

Age Requirements

23 years or older: You can apply as an individual beneficiary if you're not part of a cohabitation unit or registered partnership
18-22 years: You may qualify if you came from child protection services or are an absolute orphan
No age limit: For women who are victims of gender-based violence or human trafficking

Residency Requirements

Legal and continuous residence in Spain for at least one year before applying
All beneficiaries must be registered (empadronados) at the same address
Both Spanish nationals and legal foreign residents can apply

Income Requirements

Your average monthly income from the previous year must be at least €10 lower than your corresponding guaranteed IMV amount. Income includes:

Employment income
Self-employment earnings
Rental income
Investment returns
Other benefits (with some exceptions)

Asset Limits for 2026

You won't qualify if your net assets (excluding your primary residence) exceed these thresholds:

Single adult: €26,409.60 maximum
Two adults: €35,213 maximum
Family of four: €46,016.88 maximum

Assets include savings accounts, investments, additional properties, and valuable possessions—but your main home is excluded from this calculation.

What is the Child Support Supplement (CAPI)?

The Complemento de Ayuda para la Infancia (CAPI) is an additional benefit linked to the IMV that provides extra support to households with children. The good news? You can receive CAPI even if you don't qualify for the regular IMV, as it has broader income thresholds.

2026 CAPI Monthly Amounts by Age

Children aged 0-3 years: €115 per month per child
Children aged 3-6 years: €80.50 per month per child
Children aged 6-18 years: €57.50 per month per child

These amounts are per child, so a family with multiple children can receive the supplement for each eligible child.

CAPI Eligibility Requirements

The Child Support Supplement has more flexible requirements than the standard IMV:

Income limit: Annual income cannot exceed 300% of the IMV guaranteed income
Asset limits: Higher than IMV (ranging from €55,460 to €102,997 depending on household size)
At least one minor must be part of the household
All children must be registered at the same address

Online Application (Recommended)

Important Tax Information

If you receive the IMV, you must file an income tax declaration (IRPF), regardless of your total income. However:

The IMV itself is tax-exempt up to €12,600 annually (1.5 times the IPREM)
Most beneficiaries won't owe any tax on the benefit
Amounts exceeding €12,600 must be declared as employment income

Processing Time

The Social Security has up to 6 months to process your application. If approved, payments are backdated to the month following your application date.
